CFPB Drops Lawsuit Against MoneyGram

On April 8, 2025, Reuters reported that the CFPB has asked a federal court to withdraw from the agency's own 2022 case against MoneyGram. This action leaves the New York attorney general as the sole plaintiff.

In April 2022, the CFPB and the State of New York sued MoneyGram for allegedly repeatedly and unfairly violating a federal rule to make sending money to friends and family outside the U.S. easier. The lawsuit specifically alleges that the company stranded customers waiting for their money when it failed to deliver funds promptly to recipients abroad.

The State of New York did not oppose the CFPB’s motion but apparently will continue to pursue the matter as the remaining plaintiff.
