On August 17, 2026, FinCEN held an outreach event bringing together law enforcement and financial sectors to address health care benefits fraud, specifically focusing on the exploitation of hospice care services. Participants discussed new and emerging health care fraud schemes targeting federal and state health insurance programs, associated financial typologies and red flag indicators, and opportunities to boost awareness around hospice care fraud.
According to FinCEN, health care fraud exploiting Medicare and Medicaid continues to grow in scale and complexity. Furthermore, these activities are frequently linked to domestic fraud networks and global criminal groups taking advantage of federal health programs. FinCEN urges financial institutions to remain alert to these risks and suggests examining its Advisory issued in March of this year regarding fraud strategies that compromise Medicare, Medicaid, and various other government-sponsored health benefit plans.
FinCEN also held a training session for law enforcement on August 18 on how to use BSA data to combat fraud. These engagements build on FinCEN’s work to counter fraud in partnership with the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
