Hsu’s Remarks on Stablecoins

On April 8, 2022, Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu spoke before the Institute of International Economic Law at Georgetown University Law Center, where he shared his thoughts on the architecture of stablecoins.

In his remarks, Hsu discussed why stablecoins matter and the issue of the architecture of a USD stablecoin system. According to Hsu, the three architectural policy considerations of the stablecoin system include stability, interoperability, and separability. Hsu concluded his speech with the statement “While there remains a wide range of perspectives on crypto’s future, there appears to be an emerging consensus that rules-of-the-road and safeguards are needed today to protect people and balance the risks and benefits of blockchain technology as it continues to evolve.”
