On April 18, 2024, The Hill reported that a federal judge temporarily barred the Trump administration from laying off roughly 90 percent of the CFPB while she considers whether it violated her previous order. This came after the CFPB started the process toward sweeping layoffs at the agency just the day before.
In late March, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson blocked the administration from stopping work and firing employees at the CFPB. She also ordered the reinstatement of previously terminated workers after the CFPB terminated dozens of probationary employees back in February.
In a statement, Jackson said:
“We’re not going to disburse 1,483 people into the universe and have them be unable to communicate with the agency anymore until we have determined whether that is lawful or not.”
