Paoletta Becomes CFPB Acting Director

On August 4, 2026, the Ballard Spahr reported that CFPB Deputy Director Mark Paoletta became the Bureau’s Acting Director following the expiration of Russell Vought’s service as Acting Director on August 1. Meanwhile, President Trump’s nominee to permanently lead the CFPB, Brian Johnson, is still awaiting Senate confirmation.

The Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs held Johnson’s confirmation hearing on July 23 but has not yet voted on his nomination. Until Johnson is confirmed and assumes office, the CFPB will continue under acting leadership.

Paoletta’s appointment is not expected to significantly change the CFPB’s policy direction. As Chief Legal Officer and Deputy Director, he has been closely involved in the Trump administration’s efforts to reshape the Bureau’s priorities and operations. Vought is also expected to remain involved as a senior adviser until Johnson takes office.
