Flood for Lenders
Flood Insurance for Lenders
Flood insurance compliance is a critical part of the real estate lending process—and one that regulators continue to closely examine. While the requirements may seem straightforward at first, lenders are responsible for applying a number of specific regulatory requirements throughout the life of a loan. Missing a required notice, incorrectly calculating the required amount of insurance, or overlooking a servicing requirement can expose your institution to examination findings, civil money penalties, and unnecessary compliance risk.
Flood insurance compliance doesn't begin and end with determining whether a property is located in a Special Flood Hazard Area. Lenders play an important role in ensuring the institution complies with the federal flood insurance requirements from application through closing and beyond. From obtaining flood determinations and providing required notices to understanding escrow requirements and force placement procedures, lenders make decisions every day that directly impact compliance.
We believe flood insurance compliance is one of the most practical areas of lending compliance because it requires lenders to consistently apply regulatory requirements throughout the lending process. The challenge often isn't understanding that flood insurance is required—it's knowing exactly what the regulations require, when those requirements apply, and how to avoid common mistakes. That's why practical, role-specific training is essential.
To help financial institutions provide meaningful flood insurance training for their lending staff, we've developed two versions of our Flood Insurance for Lenders training program—each designed to meet different training needs depending on the level of detail your team requires.
OPTION 1: Flood Insurance Essentials for Lenders (TBD minutes)
For many institutions, the objective of flood insurance training is to ensure lenders understand the core regulatory requirements without taking too much time away from serving members and customers. This version delivers a practical overview of the federal flood insurance requirements in a concise, easy-to-follow format.
In approximately 40 minutes, participants will learn when flood insurance is required, how to understand flood determinations, the required borrower notices, minimum insurance requirements, common exemptions, and other key concepts lenders encounter during the loan process.
This option is ideal for annual training, onboarding new lenders, or providing a practical refresher on the fundamentals of flood insurance compliance.
OPTION 2: Advanced Flood Insurance for Lenders (TBD minutes)
For institutions seeking more comprehensive training, this version provides a deeper examination of the federal flood insurance requirements and how they apply throughout the lending process.
In addition to covering the foundational requirements, this program explores more detailed compliance topics, including escrow requirements, force placement procedures, acceptance of private flood insurance policies, recordkeeping responsibilities, common examination issues, civil money penalties, and practical strategies for mitigating compliance risk. Throughout the program, participants gain a better understanding of how the rules apply in real-world lending situations and how to recognize issues before they become compliance problems.
This option is well suited for institutions looking to strengthen their flood insurance compliance program or for lenders who regularly originate or work with real estate-secured loans.
Built for Your Entire Lending Team
While both versions of our program are designed with loan officers in mind, this training is valuable for your entire lending function—including loan officers, processors, assistants, underwriters, managers, auditors, and even compliance professionals. Whether your team is new to flood insurance or highly experienced, both versions of our program provide meaningful insights and real-world examples.
Taught by a former lender and processor, each program is designed to be practical, engaging, and directly relevant to day-to-day responsibilities—without overwhelming your team.
