On August 19, 2026, Comptroller of the Currency Jonathan Gould participated in a Fireside Chat at the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium. During the discussion, Gould provided an update on the OCC’s ongoing efforts to foster economic growth and establish the United States as a global leader in the digital asset and currency revolution.
Key points from the discussion include:
Over the last 18 months, the OCC has processed 40 applications for new bank charters, and more than half of these requests incorporate digital asset functionality. As a result, the integration of payment stablecoins is increasingly becoming a routine element of the business strategies submitted for our evaluation.
Gould stated that the regulatory development regarding the GENIUS Act implementation began even before the legislation was officially signed and that the Agency are operating with significant urgency to ensure a final regulation is released by November.
Gould expressed enthusiasm regarding the evolution of stablecoins and the OCC’s regulatory role, noting that the current mandate for payment stablecoins is fundamentally similar to the agency’s original 1860s mission of ensuring the quality of reserve assets for national bank notes.
